I just opened October’s OVL to find a nice surprise on page 47! It looks really good and even better now with the late summer flowers still in bloom.

Upon completion of our new house we were faced with a large garden which was a sea of mud. Susan helped to clarify our ideas as the type of garden and its overall design, taking on board our own ideas (and budget) as well as her own. In particular her extensive knowledge of plants and their uses, their size and colour has provided a beautiful garden.Susan was happy to provide a flexible service as and when needed and was able to bring in other reliable local trades-people to provide for example hard landscaping service.

We bought Susan’s design services through our Village Hall auction of promises: she had very generously donated her time to this fund raiser.  We wanted a make-over for our front garden.  It is not really a garden we look at very much, as it is on the road through Stevington, and our house is built to face out towards the rear.  Our objective was to get a real ‘wow’ factor as people went past the garden – we wanted people to think that’s very pretty as they drove or walked past.  And low maintenance! Susan came up with a range of ideas that gave us a big splash of colour that lasted for most of the year.  The option we selected was planted out in the early spring, and pretty quickly the bed was awash with colour, and gave us exactly what we wanted.  We are now looking forward to the spring and the next season of flowering.

From the time we contacted Susan to the time the job was completed, she worked in a very professional and efficient manner. She came and measured up and drew designs for the work we requested, listening to our ideas and incorporating them if possible. She gave us a clear estimate of the cost and the approximate time it would take for the work to be completed. She and her colleague … worked quickly and efficiently together… Susan then recommended… carpenter and joiner…We can truly say that we are very happy with the work we had done and have no hesitation in recommending Susan to you. She is able to advise on planting and design and is able to recommend any other professional work people that may be needed.

We asked Susan to design a paved seating area in a usually sunny south-facing corner so that we could enjoy more of our garden area, especially as our west facing patio is shaded well into the afternoon. Susan listened to our initial ideas and came up with some additional suggestions which we happily took on board. We knew from the outset that we could work with Susan. She has a friendly, professional approach and an impressive eye for detail. After we agreed on a final design, Susan drew up plans, sourced the materials to match our existing patio and took extra pressure from us by arranging estimates with landscapers. Importantly she managed the project through from start to finish. The end result is a delightful hexagonal paved area with extended pathway from the existing patio, all of which blends in wonderfully with the house and garden. It’s a pleasure to open the curtains and appreciate the view each morning – and we have Susan to thank for that.

Susan has been the professional gardener at Cranford Hall since February 2007… principally been the maintenance of the borders, the planning and design of several new features and generally advising the owners on all aspects of management. Susan has proved herself well up to these tasks. She uses her training intelligently and is able to successfully marry theory with practice. She is diligent, energetic and conscientious. During her time at Cranford, the gardens have improved considerably, in large part due to her efforts. I would have no hesitation in recommending her…

I was very interested to receive your concept design and all your clear explanation and advice underpinning the design. I have always felt that you are extremely thorough and helpful in all aspects of your work, including the rejuvenation of the shrubs in my garden, and so competent in all you do. I have much to think about and will contact you again in due course

The garden is beautiful. Really lovely. I could hear a Song Thrush singing and then the Goldfinch arrived!

We walked from the windmill and found this absolutely beautiful garden, its a bonus!

  • by KB June 2014

Our garden was a real mess.  Being a busy working mum, the garden had not been able to be a  priority.  I love flowers and plants of every kind and my dream was to have a garden that would take on a life of it’s own with flowering  perennials blooming throughout the seasons. I was also looking to make my life a little easier with some weeding and pruning but less than now.

A large  lleylandi hedge had taken over the back end enclosing everything into a dark featureless space where only weeds and a sorry looking eunonymous and yew would grow.   We’d taken down a long trelliss down the middle of the garden to open everything out and decide on what to do.  The elongated rockery had turned into a weed and moss mountain with very little colour or interest.  The shrubs along the back fence were old and unfruitful so a new solution had to be found.

  • Having had a garden that had evolved over 10 years without any structure, I made contact with Susan to seek assistance. Susan listened to my ideas about the type of garden I wanted to achieve and we discussed which existing plants would work in a new planting scheme. She then provided a detailed planting plan incorporating these ideas which showed her extensive knowledge of plants, their uses, size and colour.

Susan and her team worked efficiently to implement the design.

Susan has also provided a detailed maintenance plan, which gives month by month schedule on how each plant should be maintained.

I’m really looking forward to seeing our new garden flourish over the coming years.

    JW, Flitton.
